Autism & Special Needs Resources

These resources are designed to support parents, caregivers, and families navigating autism and special needs. Whether you are newly diagnosed or further along in your journey, you are not alone — help and support are here.

Understanding Autism
Autism is a developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. Every child is different, and understanding your child’s unique needs is the first step.

🧠 Early Signs of Autism

Every child develops differently, but some early signs may indicate that a child could benefit from evaluation and support.

Common early signs include:

  • Limited eye contact
  • Delayed speech or no speech
  • Not responding to their name
  • Repetitive behaviors (rocking, hand-flapping, lining up toys)
  • Difficulty with social interaction or playing with others
  • Strong reactions to sounds, lights, or textures

If you notice these signs, it does not mean something is “wrong” — it simply means your child may experience the world differently and could benefit from additional support.

🧭 What To Do After Diagnosis

Receiving a diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but it is also the first step toward getting the right support for your child.

Steps to take:

  • Learn about your child’s needs and strengths
  • Contact early intervention or therapy providers
  • Speak with your child’s doctor about recommended services
  • Explore therapy options (ABA, speech, occupational therapy)
  • Connect with support groups or other parents

Take it one step at a time. You don’t have to figure everything out at once.

🧩 Understanding Sensory Needs

Many children with autism experience the world through their senses in a different way.

This may look like:

  • Being sensitive to loud sounds, bright lights, or certain textures
  • Avoiding touch or certain clothing
  • Seeking movement (spinning, jumping, crashing)
  • Becoming overwhelmed in busy environments

Ways to support sensory needs:

  • Create calm, quiet spaces
  • Use sensory tools (headphones, fidget items, weighted blankets)
  • Follow your child’s comfort level
  • Build routines to reduce overwhelm

Understanding sensory needs can help reduce stress and create a more supportive environment for your child.
